Radio certificate apps compared
For the radio certificates the choice is far smaller than for the boating licence – only three apps cover UBI, SRC and LRC at all. Here they are side by side.
Three learning apps cover the German radio certificates UBI, SRC and LRC: Bootspruefung.de with free official questions and sample radio messages in its Pro version, SBF-Fragen from publisher Delius Klasing with a spaced-repetition box, and Boatpass, which bundles all three radio catalogues with SBF See and Binnen in one app.

The apps in detail
Boatpass
Covers five licences – SBF See, SBF Binnen, UBI, SRC and LRC – in a single app. Each catalogue unlocks via one-off purchase, no subscription. Includes exam simulation, mistake training and per-category progress. New to the market and accordingly few ratings.
Best suited for: Anyone taking several licences who does not want a subscription.
Bootspruefung.de
The market leader: on sale since 2013, over 900,000 customers by its own account, and the broadest licence coverage here. All official exam questions are free to use; theory texts, full offline use and PDF downloads sit behind Pro. Progress syncs with the website course.
Best suited for: Anyone wanting the widest licence coverage plus a companion online course.
SBF-Fragen
From publisher Delius Klasing, with a spaced-repetition box, exam simulation on original papers, offline learning and cloud sync across devices. Neat touch: if you already hold a licence, you only get the questions you still need. The free version shows only a subset of the catalogue.
Best suited for: Anyone who already holds a licence and only needs the remaining questions.
Radio certificate app for Android
All three apps are on Google Play. The difference lies less in the question catalogue – that is official and identical everywhere – than in what surrounds it: Bootspruefung.de supplies sample radio messages and theory texts in its Pro version, while SBF-Fragen relies on a spaced-repetition box with exam simulation on original papers.
The popular free apps by Matthias Wimmer cover no radio certificates, and neither does Sailbyte. Anyone studying for a radio certificate effectively has three options.
With Boatpass the radio modules cost €7.99 one-off (UBI and SRC) and €9.99 (LRC) – no subscription, permanent access.
Radio certificate app for iPhone and iPad
On iOS, Bootspruefung.de and SBF-Fragen remain. Both cover UBI, SRC and LRC.
Boatpass is not currently in the App Store – the iOS version is in development. On iPhone the other two apps are today the only choice for a radio certificate.
What Boatpass does – and what it does not
Transparency note: Boatpass is our own app. That is precisely why we list the prices, features and ratings of the alternatives in full – including where they beat us. The figures come from the public Play Store listings and the vendors’ own websites.
